Notations 21: an exhibition and concert series celebrating
the best and brightest of contemporary composers working with visual scores.
Presented by The Project Room for New Media at Chelsea Art Museum
Curated by Nina Colosi and Theresa Sauer
The Project Room for New Media at Chelsea Art Museum will display fascinatingly creative musical scores that not only make for exciting music, but inspiring visual art as well. The scores have been compiled by ethnomusicologist Theresa Sauer in her book Notations 21, written in honor of the 40th anniversary of John’s Cage’s seminal book Notations.
The exhibition includes the debut of a film by Carlos Friere, featuring interview material with such groundbreaking composers as John Cage, Earle Brown, Robert Ashley, Karlheinz Stockhausen, James Tenney, and a new, exclusive interview with Ge-Suk Yeo. In addition, an ongoing film loop of all the Notations 21 scores will be projected on a large scale, and a rare copy of John Cage’s Notations will be exhibited on loan from Northwestern University’s John Cage Collection. Listening stations will allow visitors to hear the music they view in the book.
Accompanying the exhibition, Performing Arts at CAM will present three Saturday afternoon concerts on October 4, 11 and 18, at 2pm with performances by leading figures in the field, as well as up-and-coming composers. Concerts will include performances by composer Halim El-Dabh, internationally regarded as Egypt’s foremost living composer of classical music and one of the major composers of the twentieth century; composer and flutist Ellen Burr who, while exploring free improvisation under the direction of Dr. Arthur Wolff, participated in classes with John Cage; composer, performer and sound artist Joan La Barbara, who has garnered prestigious awards such as a 2004 Guggenheim Fellowship in Music Composition, a DAAD Artist-in-residency fellowship in Berlin, and seven national Endowment for the Arts fellowships; and multifaceted composer, video artist, interdisciplinary creator.
